Budget boost for Gauteng
Updated | By Sinethemba Madolo
The Gauteng department of
finance has allocated about R1.9bn in addition to its provincial adjustment
budget.
The province’s MEC for Finance Barbara Creecy tabled her mid-term budget in the legislature on Thursday.
Creecy announced in March that the budget for the province was R121.4bn. It now sits at R123.2bn.
The MEC says the bulk of the budget will go towards the improvement and building of infrastructure, with an increase of R567.9 million while health and education will receive R722 million.
"The purpose of this is to protect the frontline services in schools and hospitals.”

Creecy says the boost mainly comes from the provinces' own revenue collection as Minister of Finance, Tito Mboweni, did not allocate money to Gauteng during the national budget adjustment in March.
"Fortunately we have continued to outperform in this area and last year we managed to collect over R6 billion in own revenue and we're really using the money so that we able to sort out some of the problems in the adjustment budget."
Creecy says the adjustment is to make sure that service delivery continues without any hitches until next year’s budget adjustment.
