The Zimbabwean driver of the bus that crashed on the N1 in
Limpopo on Friday, has made his first appearance in court on charges relating
to the death of nine passengers.
The 41-year old George Themba comes from Harare and according to the police, he tried to flee South Africa shortly after the fatal accident.
Limpopo police spokesperson, Moatshe Ngoepe, says the driver attempted to cross the Beitbridge border back into Zimbabwe shortly after he was discharged from hospital.
“He was taken to hospital with 51 other injured passengers,” adds Ngoepe.
Ngoepe says the police search for the driver intensified when he couldn’t be found to provide more clarity on the possible cause of the accident.
“The police were then tipped-off, they swiftly responded and subsequently the driver was caught hidden inside the goods trailer trying to illegally cross the border to Zimbabwe.”
The bus overturned on the N1 South in the early hours of Friday morning, while travelling to Gauteng.
Police are still in the process of identifying all the deceased.
