Cable theft to blame for deadly train collision

Metrorail says this morning's train collision was caused by the theft of a signal cable.

One person died and 112 others were injured when two trains collided in Elandsfontein on the East Rand.
Metrorail spokesperson Theo Games says it is working with officials to clear the scene so services can be restored in time for the afternoon peak.

The commuter rail service operator had to suspend train services between Pretoria and Johannesburg in the aftermath of the collision.

Metrorail subsequently introduced bus services between Kempton Park and Germiston so that its commuters could get to work on time.
