Cachalia, Masemola agree to submit 121 dockets to Madlanga Commission
Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia and National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola have agreed to submit the 121 dockets from the Political Killings Task Team to the Madlanga Commission.
Cachalia and Masemola held a meeting on Monday in the wake of the top cop’s announcement that the dockets would be returned to KZN.
Masemola’s decision drew widespread criticism.
Police ministry spokesperson Kamogelo Mogotsi said the dockets taken to KwaZulu-Natal by Masemola would be submitted to the Madlanga Commission for thorough investigation.
The dockets, central to KZN Provincial Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi's claims of political interference in high-profile cases, were removed from the province but have since been returned for investigations to resume.
President Cyril Ramaphosa set up the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry after Mkhwanazi accused Police Minister Senzo Mchunu of interfering in police operations, including ordering the disbandment of the high-profile Political Killings Task Team and the removal of the 121 dockets.
“Minister Cachalia and General Masemola agreed to ensure that the SAPS and all its members support the work of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of Interference in the Criminal Justice System and uphold its integrity,” said Mogotsi.
“Where there are matters in these dockets requiring urgent further criminal investigations or prosecution, the SAPS will advise the commission accordingly.”
Mogotsi added that Cachalia and Masemola “agreed to the necessity of maintaining a professional, collegial and respectful relationship.”
“Importantly, they agreed that there must be prior consultation and regular reporting on important matters in the public and policy domains,” she said.
