Calm restored in Hammanskraal
Updated | By MornéJK
Calm has been restored to the Hammanskraal area late on Wednesday after three days of violent community protests.
Residents were protesting against the eviction of residents and demolition of illegal structures.
On Wednesday Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements, Paul Mashatile visited the area and called for the suspension of the evictions until the matter could be properly addressed.
The eviction of Hammanskraal residents who occupied land partly owned by Tshwane municipality and a royal family, has been halted, Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements Paul Mashatile said on Wednesday.
At least two people were killed on Monday when an eviction agency tried to move the squatters.
The evictions prompted clashes between the community, the Red Ants and members of a private security company, that resulted in the deaths of two security guards.
