Nzimande was briefing the media on the state of readiness ahead of the party’s national congress in Boksburg .

The congress will also see the Nzimande step down after more than 20 years at the helm of the SACP when it elects new leadership.

Nzimande told journalists South Africa’s business sector failed to invest in Eskom, even after they were warned of possible load shedding in the 1990s.

“We are in this trouble because of capitalists’ greed, but capitalists are washing their hands now. What is the government doing? You hear some of these capitalists, with full stomachs saying the president is failing to lead. Eskom is dark, they forget that some of them wanted Eskom privatized in the past, part of the reason why we didn’t invest in Eskom in 1998.

“A report on Eskom said we must recapitalise, put money or else in 15 years we are going to start having blackouts. But money was not put there, they kept quiet because they were hoping to feed on the remains of Eskom," said Nzimande.
