The police in Gauteng have arrested 1,460 suspects for various charges during a crime prevention operation over the weekend.
The suspects include a gang that is alleged to be responsible for car hijacking and robbing people of their bank cards.
The other suspects face charges varying from attempted murder, rape, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and dealing in drugs.
Police spokesperson, Mavela Masondo says the police have been searching for the gang after several cases of hijacking and robbery of bank cards.
The cases were mostly reported in Lenasia, Ennerdale, De Deur, and Orange Farm.
“A team consisting of members from Crime Intelligence, units of SAPS and Metro Police Departments, went out searching for the suspects until four of them were rounded up and arrested in Lenasia over the weekend,” says Masondo.
They will be appearing at Lenasia Magistrates Court on Monday, 10 January 2022, facing charges of car hijacking and armed robbery.
The other arrested suspects will appear in various Magistrate Courts around Gauteng from Monday.
