Case against man who ‘threatened’ Ramaphosa postponed
Sabelo Masango appeared briefly in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court following his arrest in Germiston on Friday.
It’s alleged that Masango made threats against the chief financial officer of a Cape Town-based company, President Cyril Ramaphosa, and Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.
He faces charges of assault, in addition to those related to the alleged threats.
Hawks’ national spokesperson Thandi Mbambo said the 28-year-old was arrested following an investigation by the Crimes Against the State (CATS) unit, after the businesswoman filed a complaint with Cape Town police.
It’s still unclear what the motive for the threats was.
“The arrest on Friday, 23 May 2025, follows a case reported earlier this month. On Monday, 12 May 2025, a complainant, who is the Chief Executive Officer of a Cape Town-based company, allegedly received a voice message from the suspect, in which threats were made against the President of South Africa. The suspect is also alleged to have sent multiple threatening messages targeting the complainant, her family, and the Executive Mayor of Cape Town,” Mbambo said.
Following the arrest, Masango was transported to Cape Town ahead of his court appearance on Monday morning.
He is expected to appear before the same court on Monday after the matter has been postponed for further investigation.
