Wearing a neck brace and occasionally rubbing his shoulder, Lomas appeared briefly before the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court sitting in Palm Ridge on Friday morning.

The 77-year-old faces over 60 counts of corruption linked to the R1.4 billion upgrade of the Kusile power station in Mpumalanga, between 2014 and 2017.

He has been in custody since he arrived at the OR Tambo International Airport last week following his extradition from the United Kingdom.

“Mr Lomas, the court postpones your matter until the 28th of October for the disclosure of the case content to be disclosed to your legal team,” said Magistrate Phillip Venter.

“Until then, you remain in custody. No bail is fixed.”

Lomas was released on bail following his arrest in the UK in 2021. After his extradition was sealed between the two countries in January last year, Lomas made five appeals to bar his return to South Africa.

He made his initial appearance before the Kempton Magistrates Court last Friday.

Speaking outside court last week, a frail-looking Lomas described his handling by the extradition team as “gracious” and said it was good to be back.
