Cele briefed the media on the latest developments around politically motivated killings in KwaZulu-Natal, including the murder of former ANC Youth League general-secretary Sindiso Magaqa.

Recently two senior KZN ANC leaders were arrested in connection with political killings in the area, but charges have since been provisionally dropped against Harry Gwala District Municipality mayor Mluleki Ndobe.

Newcastle mayor Ntuthuko Mahlaba is still behind bars.

He says the task team is not meant to replace the police, nor are they the Hawks.

"That policing is continuing with other wings. Hawks are doing their work this is basic task team dealing with a political killings in the province, I mean political killings, not ANC political killings, not Inkatha political killings, all political killings."

The minister also denied that any case involving what is believed to have been a politically motivated killing has been withdrawn.

Instead, he says that some charges have been provisionally withdrawn due to insufficient evidence.

Six of 59 cases on the court roll have been withdrawn.

"Some of these that have been withdrawn they have been reinstated. If I'm not mistaken they said the evidence was insufficient, not saying there is no evidence they say insufficient, hence provisionally,” says Cele.
