Cele addressed residents during a ministerial crime prevention imbizo in the area on Monday.

He was accompanied by the Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and Gauteng Community Safety MEC Faith Mazibuko.

The imbizo was a follow-up to a visit the minister made to the area following a mass shooting which claimed the lives of seven people.

Grievances raised by residents included a lack of police visibility and the amount of drugs in the community.

Cele said an Ipid team will be sent to police stations in the area to monitor service delivery.

“I’ll ensure that Ipid visit Ennerdale, Lenasia South and De Deur police stations as soon as possible and provide a full report in three weeks. The community members should be invited as well to make presentations. In that way we get a report from both the community and our internal structures.

“That way we will be able to discover why is it that people are always complaining about police service.”

At the same time Cele warned community members not to offer bribes to police officers.

“I do not agree with the narrative that all police are bad. They’re bad police and good police that is why the prisons are overpopulated. The good police officers are spoiled by the community members from offering bribes to them.

“Police officers don’t get bribed by the trees. However, community members offer officers bribes. I urge you all to stop offering police officers bribes.”
