Chabane crash case postponed to August
The prosecutor told the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court that the investigations were still under way and they were yet to be provided with two accident reports required by the court.
The defence team was not impressed with the submissions and the State's demand for a four month postponement, arguing that it should be a final remand.
Chabane and his two bodyguards sergeants Lawrence Lentsoane and Lesiba Sekele, were killed on March 15 after Rikhotso allegedly made a U-turn across the N1 between Mokopane and Polokwane. Chabane's VW Touareg was totally crushed by the impact.
Magistrate Mohamed Shaik agreed with the State that the forensic evidence of the German car company and police forensic reports were crucial in determining the case's direction.
He warned that if the matter was rushed and went ahead without the forensic report, it would face the wrath of the media, and offend the relatives of victims who hoped to see justice done.
“You [Rikhotso] will not suffer prejudice if this case is postponed because you are out on bail and have the freedom of movement. It is true you want this matter to be finalised. It will be postponed for the purpose of getting evidence on the roll," Shaik said.
The matter will be back in court on August 18.
