Chris Hani Region ANC chief whip in court for breaching lockdown regulations

A senior member of the African National Congress (ANC) in the Chris Hani Municipality in the Eastern Cape is expected to appear in court on Monday.
Madoda Papiyana, who is both the Regional Treasurer and Chief Whip at Chris Hani District Municipality, was arrested in Gushingalo on Friday after he transgressed the lockdown regulations by fleeing from a roadblock.
National police spokesperson Vish Naidoo says the 39-year-old was arrested after a high-speed chase.

“On the 17 April members conducted a road block in the Eastern Cape and while they were searching vehicles, they spotted a vehicle speeding from the roadblock and a high-speed chase ensued.
“Members managed to stop the suspicious vehicle at eNgcobo area.”
During the arrest, police also recovered alcohol from the suspect’s vehicle.
“The suspect was arrested for drunken driving. Liqour was also recovered from his vehicle. He was detained for drunken driving as well as the contravention of the regulation of the Disaster Management Act,” Naidoo adds.
Papiyana has since tendered his resignation.
