City of Joburg moves ahead with renaming of four streets

The City of Johannesburg has invited public comment on plans to rename streets near St Mary’s Cathedral after struggle icons, including Desmond Tutu, as part of a heritage and urban renewal initiative.
The City of Johannesburg is inviting public comment on the renaming of four streets around St Mary’s Cathedral.
Plein Street would become Desmond Tutu Street, honouring the Nobel Peace Prize laureate and anti-apartheid activist.
“Archbishop Tutu served as a moral compass for South Africa, with St. Mary’s Cathedral acting as a sanctuary and beacon of hope. By integrating urban regeneration with heritage preservation, this project aims to create a living tribute that honours Desmond Tutu and his ideals,” the city said in a statement on Wednesday.

Wanderers Street would be renamed Simeon Nkoane Street, in recognition of the Anglican priest and leader.
De Villiers Street would be renamed Trevor Huddleston Street in honour of the anti-apartheid bishop.
As a reflection of the old cathedral, Hoek Street would be known as Cathedral Street.
Approval for the renaming was given by the council back in April 2022, with a final window for public comment closing on 5 May.
“This plan envisions a safe, respectful, clean and inclusive environment where residents, businesses, informal traders, and Joburgers can coexist harmoniously,” the city added.
