City Power has spent million in replacing vandalised infrastructure in particularly Lenasia South, south-east of Johannesburg.

City Power says in the last eight months it has replaced seven electricity transformers providing power to the Unaville informal settlement.

City Power Spokesperson Isaac Mangena says it has cost the city close to R1.5 million to replace these transformers.

Mangena believes the transformers are allegedly stolen and being recycled at scrapyards for the copper inside.

"We have opened a case of damage of essential infrastructure with the police. We have also increased our plainclothes security visibility in the area," says Mangena.

He adds electricity polls have been cut down in the area. Mangena says this comes after City Power cut illegal power collections in the informal settlement.
