The Department of Basic Education announced on Monday that the class of 2024 achieved an overall pass rate of 87.3% during the National Senior Certificate examinations.
This is an increase from 82.9% achieved in 2023 and the highest matric pass rate in history.
Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube made the announcement in Johannesburg on Monday evening.
The Class of 2024 received 319,651 distinctions, which is an increase of over 65,000 distinctions from last year.
"I am also incredibly encouraged by the fact that approximately 67% of the Bachelor passes achieved in 2024 came from Quintile 1 to 3 schools, which are typically found in our poorer communities,” said Gwarube.
"This percentage represents an increase from 2023. This means that poorer communities are producing more and more candidates who can go on to become doctors, engineers, accountants and scientists.
"There appears to be a noticeable link between access to social grants and learner performance – something that requires further investigation," Gwarube added.
KwaZulu-Natal achieved the highest number of Bachelor passes with 84,470, followed by Gauteng with 66,979 and the Eastern Cape with 45,662.
Free State came out tops at 91%, increasing its pass rate from 89% in 2023.
KwaZulu-Natal came out second, with 89.5%, followed by Gauteng with 88.4%.
The fourth province is the North West, with 87.5%, followed by the Western Cape, at 86.6%, and Limpopo, with an improved 85.01%, came out number 6.
Mpumalanga came out seventh with 84.99%, followed by the Eastern Cape with 84.98% and lastly the Northern Cape at number 9 with 84.2%.
