'Clear act of corruption' - Joburg rescinds conversion of fixed-term contracts
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
The City of Johannesburg has rescinded a decision by the previous administration, which saw fixed term employees converted into permanent staff.
The city says the decision by the previous administration was illegal.
The decision will affect at least 100 staff members, who are affiliated to different political offices in the city.
Joburg mayor Mpho Phalatse held a press briefing in the city on Thursday - branding the decision by the previous administration was an "act of corruption".

“We in the Joburg multi-government will not leave any stone unturned in uprooting corruption,” she said.
“Anybody that applies for a service needs to apply and compete for that position fairly. They need to demonstrate the ability to deliver on the mandate of that position and not just be taken from political office into permanent positions as some favour to a political party.”
Staff who are set to be affected by this decision include the offices of the mayor and the speaker.
This will also include chief whips, deputy chief whips, chairperson of chairperson’s office, leader of the opposition’s office and offices of the MMCs and political party caucus support staff.
