Cold, wet and windy weather expected across SA this long weekend
South Africans are being warned to prepare for a cold, wet long weekend, with the South African Weather Service predicting disruptive weather as a strong cold front moves across the country.
South African Weather Service (SAWS) forecaster Tokelo Chiloane says a cold front, accompanied by a steep upper-air trough, is expected to make landfall over the Western and Northern Cape on Sunday.
The system is expected to bring cold to very cold temperatures, persistent rain, strong winds, rough seas and snowfall over mountainous areas.
Chiloane says the conditions will spread eastwards into the Eastern Cape as the weather system moves across the country.
"On Monday, the upper-air trough is expected to deepen even further as it moves over the central to eastern parts of the country, spreading the cold to very cold conditions with rain and showers further inland.
"Snow is expected over the mountainous areas of the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga, with the highest confidence remaining over these mountain ranges."
The Weather Service says there is also a possibility of light snow over some higher-lying areas outside these regions, although confidence remains lower.
The system could result in several weather-related impacts, including localised flooding of low-lying areas, roads, bridges and informal settlements due to persistent rainfall.
Strong winds may also cause damage to roofs and infrastructure, lead to fallen trees and power interruptions, and create dangerous driving conditions.
Along the coastline, SAWS warns of damaging waves and rough seas that could affect maritime activities and coastal infrastructure.
Very cold conditions are expected to increase risks for vulnerable communities and place additional strain on livestock, while snow over mountain passes could lead to hazardous travel conditions, road closures and transport disruptions.
Chiloane has urged the public, motorists, farmers and disaster management authorities to stay updated on official weather warnings and take necessary precautions as the system moves through the country.
