The 60-year old Bester was training near the Magalies mountains in the Amandasig area of Tshwane when he says three men approached him.

He was hit with a rock at the back of his head before they robbed him and tied him up.

His son, Shaun-Nick Bester, released photos of his seriously injured father on his Instagram on Sunday evening.

According to his son, Nick Bester managed to escape down the mountain by sliding on his back until he was right against the fence of one of the properties.

He was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a local hospital, where he was to undergo more tests last night.

Neither police nor the family could be reached at the time of publishing.
