Consumer Commission not informed of pilchards recall

The National Consumer Commission says it has not received a formal notification from West Food Processors to inform it of the decision to recall certain brands of canned pilchards.

West Food Processors recalled 400g canned pilchards over the weekend, citing faulty canning which could ultimately lead to consumers falling ill.

Affected brands include Cape Point and Saldana, Shoprite Rite brand, Checkers Housebrand, U-Brand and OK Housebrand.

The commission’s deputy commissioner Thezi Mabuza says the proper guidelines were not followed by West Food Processors when recalling the items.

"As of now we have not received a formal notification from the supplier. When we say a normal notification, we mean that information that will describe the brand that they have manufactured.

"What is also essential is that they should tell us the number of cans, including their distributing channels, where they have distributed to and to whom.

"Based on that we are able to assess the risk as the commission and advise them in relation to the appropriate mechanism of enforcing the recall," she adds.

Mabuza says the commission will issue a notice to the supplier, compelling them to recall the product in relation to its guidelines.
