Corruption Watch: Gauteng has highest number of corruption complaints
Updated | By Princess Mahogo
Corruption Watch says Gauteng has the highest number of complaints related to corruption and fraud.
The organisation released its 11th annual corruption report on Tuesday.
Corruption Watch’s Janine Erasmus says this does now mean that Gauteng is the province with the most corruption.
“Gauteng is the province with the highest percentage of reports (36%), followed by KZN with (18%) and the Free State at (13%). This does not necessarily mean that Gauteng is more corrupt, there are certain factors that contribute to this figure, for instance we as CW are primarily Gauteng based so our profile here is higher, it is the most densely populated province in the country and it is the economic hub of the country.”
Erasmus says the latest report shows a decline in the number of complaint compared to the previous year.
“The threatening and killing of whistleblowers is one of the reasons for a decline in the current crime reports which amount to 2,168 compared to 3,248 in 2021.
“The types of corruption most reported countrywide are maladministration and mismanagement of funds. A strategy that involves the participation of both the government and society is needed in order to prevent and end corruption.”
