Cosatu Limpopo supports calls for Zuma exclusion at May Day rally
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
Cosatu in Limpopo says it's a contradiction to have President Jacob Zuma address the trade union federation's May Day rally, while at the same time demanding he step down.
Its comments come after several Cosatu affiliates' called for the president to be disinvited from the gathering in Bloemfontein in the Free State on Monday.
The issue reared its head when a leaked letter from the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) came to light earlier this week.
Cosatu Limpopo secretary Gerald Twala addressed the media today.
In the letter from Nehawu general secretary Bereng Soke to Cosatu general secretary Bheki Ntshalintshali, the union said it did not believe Zuma is the right person to address the rally.
It says inviting the president would send conflicting messages to members of the trade union federation.
Earlier this week, Cosatu spokesperson Sizwe Pamla refused to be drawn in on the request contained in the letter.
However, he says whoever leaked the letter knew exactly what they were doing.
Nehawu has previously called for the president to resign.
The union said it can no longer be denied that the leadership of President Zuma is now "untenable".
