Court grants bail to 13 corruption accused former cops

Thirteen former police officers who are facing charges of fraud, theft and corruption have been granted R3000 bail each by the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.
Ten others were also arrested, including admin clerks in the police service and several businessmen.
This brings the tally to 23.
Investigating Directorate spokesperson Sindisiwe Seboka says the group is accused of colluding to inflate contracts for police vehicle repairs.
“The accused, ranging from former police officers, SAPS admin clerks, and various business persons are charged for colluding to benefit Paroex Auto and Mechanical Holdings PTY LTD, a company which mispresented that its directors or owners had not done business with the state in the period of 12 months preceding the dates on which each of the six written price quotations were submitted. In respect of all submitted written price quotations, fraudulent BBBEE certificates were attached to the bid documents. False business addresses were also provided and prices highly inflated.
“The former police officers and/or government employees stand accused of misrepresenting that they convened a resource committee and complied with all the responsibilities imposed on them by section 45 of the PFMA and common law to award the tenders.”
The accused are expected to return to court on 29 June.
