Court grants bail to 7 accused of Elvis Nyathi murder
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The Randburg Magistrate's Court has granted bail to the seven accused in the murder of Zimbabwean national Elvis Nyathi.
The men, who appeared in court on Friday, were granted bail of R3 000 each.
They are facing charges of murder, attempted murder, robbery, extortion, kidnapping, public violence, and assault.
Nyathi (43) was killed in Diepsloot in April by a group of attackers who accused him of committing crimes in the area.
Residents of Diepsloot had been protesting over a lack of police visibility and the high crime in the area in the days leading up to Nyathi’s death.
His killing cast a spotlight on the ongoing tensions between South Africans and foreign nationals in the area, and moved Police Minister Bheki Cele to deploy additional officers to Diepsloot in an attempt to quell the wave of anti-foreigner sentiment.
