Seven alleged illegal mining kingpins have told the Oberholzer Magistrate's Court that they want bail.
They were arrested by the Hawks in Carletonville and Khutsong in Gauteng on Tuesday.
It's alleged they had been buying gold-bearing materials from illegal miners in the area.
Hawks spokesperson Katlego Mogale says the seven briefly appeared in court on Wednesday.
"Bethuel Ngobeni, Dumisa Moyo, Nhlanhla Magwaca, Moseki Sechele, Thabo Sechele and Khudzai Mashaya on four counts of fraud, possession of ammunition, possession of drugs, money laundering contravention of the Immigration Act and the contravention of the Precious Metals Act.
“Two of the accused are confirmed South African citizens whilst the other four's citizenship is still to be confirmed.”
Their case was postponed to 19 October for a formal bail application.
