Court told Sibiya ‘misled’ Sandton strip club about underage girls

The bail application of suspended deputy national police commissioner Shadrack Sibiya continued in the Randburg Magistrates' Court on Friday.
Sibiya faces charges of rape, human trafficking and the alleged sexual grooming of teenagers, including the 16-year-old daughter of a former associate referred to in court as "Mr M".
The court heard that Sibiya allegedly brought the teenagers to The Grand strip club in Sandton under false pretences, where they were provided with food and alcohol.
Investigating officer Sergeant Ndlovu told the court that Sibiya allegedly misled the club's manager by claiming the group was celebrating one of the girls' birthdays.
Ndlovu further testified that Sibiya was unhappy with the girls' clothing and allegedly suggested they wear something "classy".
The officer told the court that the establishment has strict age-verification procedures.
During cross-examination, Sibiya's defence lawyer, Advocate Amanda Nel, challenged parts of the investigating officer's testimony. Nel argued that some of the complainants were adults and not exclusively young teenagers.
The defence also disputed the state's human trafficking charge, arguing that "Mr M", rather than Sibiya, assisted in transporting the young women to the strip club.
Meanwhile, the defence challenged claims that Sibiya was arrested at a strip club. It argued that he was arrested at a restaurant within the venue and that three witnesses could attest to this.
The hearing continues.
