Covid-19 causes a week of extraordinary mourning in SA, says Mthethwa

Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa has paid tribute to prominent South African figures who have died because of Covid-19 complications
Mthethwa released a statement on Monday morning, following the passing of veteran actor, Sam Phillips, in the early hours of Saturday morning at the age of 72.
"Dr Phillips set a benchmark of true excellence. He was a humble practitioner whose work ethic spoke volumes of his commitment to his craft. In his 40-year career, he played a key role in driving transformation within the acting space. He was an icon with many achievements and titles but to his family, who are in our thoughts today. He was a loving father, grandfather, husband and friend," writes Mthethwa in the statement.

Spokesperson for the ministry, Masechaba Khumalo, says the sector has been hit especially hard and are in mourning over the loss of a number of well-known and popular South Africans.
“This has been a very difficult week for the arts and culture sector, as well as the country at large. In the last few days, we have learned of the passing of practitioners such as Thoko Ndlozi, Wandi Nzimande, Knowledge Simelane, Welcome “Bhodloza” Nzimande, Kabelo “KB “ Molopyane and Dr Sam Phillips," adds Khumalo.
