COVID Chronicles: Growth, hope, and positive change
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
Although most stories about the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown involve hardship, grief, and loss, there were also moments of growth, hope, and positive change.
The latest episode of ‘The COVID Chronicles’ by the Jacaranda FM News team is dedicated to the resilience shown by so many South Africans – and the sectors that refused to accept defeat.
It is the latest in a five-part podcast series commemorating five years since the country's hard lockdown.

Professor of Medicine at the University of Cape Town Linda-Gail Bekker believes there were at least two positive aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic in South Africa.
"They were good and bad. I think the good was the amazing leadership from the Department of Health, a real involvement in making sure that the population were informed, and messages were shared.
"I think the downsides, perhaps, were around; we obviously had never met a pandemic like this before. I think we may not have always responded to evidence as quickly as perhaps we should have.
"I think some of the lockdown aspects, in retrospect, may have done more harm than good.”
