Crime intelligence bosses lodge complaint over IDAC incident

The South African Police Service (SAPS) Crime Intelligence head Dumisani Khumalo and major-general Nozipho Madondo have filed formal complaints.
Khumalo and Madondo filed their complaints with the Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi, acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia, and the National Prosecuting Authority, over the handling of an Investigating Directorate Against Corruption operation.
The pair alleges they were instructed to report to the Brooklyn Police Station with overnight bags in anticipation of arrest warrants, which were never executed.
The incident has sparked allegations of intimidation and political interference.

Addressing the media outside the station that day, SAPS Head of Organised Crime Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi said he became concerned after another call was allegedly made telling the generals not to come.
“They can get phone calls to come to the police station and an hour later get phone calls not to come anymore because of some intervention from some senior people somewhere.”
Mkhwanazi questioned how the process had unfolded.
“The question is, is this how justice is served?”
He repeated claims he made before the Madlanga Commission that there were tensions between law enforcement agencies.
“We are facing a war. That’s all I can say. We are facing a war, and there are many players in this game.”
Mkhwanazi said police officials were not above investigation but insisted any action against them should follow due process.
“We’re not saying that we are immune from being investigated. If there are things we did wrong, by all means. But it has to be executed.”
He also questioned IDAC’s statement denying that there had been any arrest process involving Khumalo.
“The phone calls are on record. They are there. The calls were made to come here. The calls were made not to come anymore.”
In another statement, issued a day after the Khumalo and Madondo arrived at the station, IDAC said the pair were informed they no longer needed to present themselves.
The directorate confirmed that warrants of arrest were issued; however, a decision was made to stay the arrest due to the senior officers’ involvement in the high-level preparations for the planned nationwide demonstrations against illegal immigration.

In an exclusive interview with News24, IDAC head Andrea Johnson criticised Mkhwanazi's statements outside the Brooklyn Police Station.
She questioned his presence and described his statements that “there will be blood on the floor” as a serious threat to herself and her staff.
Johnson said she asked the National Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Andy Mothibi, to engage the acting National Police Commissioner, Puleng Dimpane, on the much-publicised face-off between the two entities.
