Criminal charges against Springs nurse for illegal abortion
Updated | By Sinethemba Madolo
Criminal charges have been opened against a male nurse for allegedly performing an illegal abortion at home on Friday.
The Far East Rand Hospital in Springs - where the nurse is employed - says the abortion was performed while the suspect was off duty.
The woman collapsed after taking medication during the procedure.
"On Friday, the nurse brought the patient to hospital complaining of bleeding and when the history was taken from the patient, the patient reported that she was given about six tablets by the same man and some manipulations were done,” says the hospital’s CEO Dr Constance Ndobe.

“The patient was admitted and upon examination of the patient the doctors realised that there were internal injuries and the patient was transferred to a higher institution - Charlotte Maxeke - for further management. Currently, the patient is in ICU in a stable condition."
Ndobe says the nurse subsequently attempted to complete the procedure in the hospital.
"He did whatever he did at home, the patient collapsed and brought here and even in the hospital he tried to disguise the injuries. He further took the patient for a procedure in the hospital.
"The nurse continued to do the procedure in the hospital, illegally so. He was off duty, he came to hospital to continue with the procedure on the patient."
Ndobe says the nurse has been suspended and the case has been referred to the South African Nursing Council for further investigation.
