Criminals targeting crèches, daycare centres, warns GDE
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The Gauteng Education Department has warned of a new trend where criminals are targeting crèche or daycare centres.
According to the department, the suspect's modus operandi includes travelling with two children, moving from one Early Childhood Development centre to another, and posing as a parent looking for placement.
The suspects then rob staff of their cell phones and valuables.
Gauteng Department of Education Spokesperson Steve Mabona says that so far, the trend appears prevalent in Daveyton.
"There is an individual who is posing as a parent who is looking for a space. He goes to different ECD centres with a Toyota Etios with registration, FZ 19 LV GP.
"We understand that this person will rob the ECD centre's staff and their cell phones, and he is actually doing that at gunpoint.”
