CWU: Court decision temporary setback

The Communication Workers Union says the interim order by the Labour Court stopping them from embarking on a go-slow at the Post Office is a temporary setback.

The Labour Court on Thursday declared the certificate by the union invalid.

CWU president Clyde Mervin says this gives the union enough time to embark on a planned strike.

"It gives us enough time to consult every single member across the country. For us it is a temporary setback," he says.

CWU is demanding a conversion of casual workers to permanent workers in 16 months and a salary increase of 15 % among other things.

Mervin says they will be back in the Labour Court on 24 April for a final ruling on the matter.

"We are very hopeful and confident that we are going to win the case. We have case studies we will use to win," he says.

Last year 10 0000 CWU members went on strike for four months.

Former Rand Water Chief Dr Simo Lushaba was late last year appointed by the Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services to stabilise the Post Office.
