The union has confirmed that Ramukumba resigned in December last year, just three months after he took the job.

SAPO has been facing financial challenges for many years with concerns that it could face liquidation if the government doesn't assist to turn it around.

In October last year, Communications Minister, Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, told Parliament that the government was doing everything it could to prevent the entity from being liquidated.

The CWU's general secretary Aubrey Tshabalala says the latest resignation might highlight deeper issues at the cash strapped entity.

“We are aware of the resignation of the CFO which is worrying because he was only three months at the job and this raises a number of issues. In the last four months or so, the Post Office failed to pay statutory workers and we met with the CFO to try and resolve those issues and how to move forward.

His resignation is a shock but also may highlight some of the deeper issues that the Post Office may have. The Post Bank has been taken away by the government so as an entity it might be difficult to be sustainable in the light that any of the businesses that Post Office should be driving, are being taken away by the government into the private sector,” says Tshabalala.

The CFO cited personal reasons for his departure; however, Tshabalala believes there is more to this.

“The reasons of the CFO citing personal grounds that he is leaving cannot be bought. We don't think those are the real reasons, but we are going to make emphasis on the call that we made earlier that there should be forensic investigations into the post office’s finances,”
