Cyril shuffles his cards

President Cyril Ramaphosa has unveiled his new cabinet while at the same time confirming that ANC deputy president David Mabuza will be sworn in as the country's second in command.

Bheki Cele, Pravin Gordhan, Blade Nzimande and Nhlanhla Nene are set to make their return to cabinet. 

Nene will return to his post as Minister of Finance, which he last occupied in December 2015 when he was fired by former president Jacob Zuma. 


Bheki Cele, who once served as National Police Commissioner, will return to SAPS as Police Minister, while ANC national chairperson Gwede Mantashe will replace Mosebenzi Zwane as Minister of Mineral Resources.


Former Minister of Finance Pravin Gordhan will return as Minister of Enterprises in an attempt to salvage the country’s embattled state-owned enterprises. 


Former Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe, who has also been replaced by Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma,  will head the Department of Energy.


Ministers Malusi Gigaba and Nomvula Mokonyane both survived the chop.


Gigaba is set to return to the Department of Home Affairs while Mokonyane will replace Ayanda Dlodlo as the Minister of Communication.


Naledi Pandor will lead the Ministry of Higher Education, while Lindiwe Sisulu will serve as the Minister of Department of International Relations.


Other new appointments include Nomaindia Mfeketo as Minister of International Relations, Blade Nzimande as Minister of Transport, Ayanda Dlodlo will serve as Public Service and Administration, Bathabile Dlamini, Susan Shabangu, Tokozile Xasa, Gugile Nkiti and Dipuo Letsatsi Duba. 


Ministers that have been axed include former Police Minister Fikile Mbalula who earlier tweeted: "President Ramaphosa is going to announce cabinet changes in a few hours. I have packed already lets move on.” 


Other ministers who have been fired include David Mahlobo, who has been linked to the Gupta family, as well as Bongani Bongo, Des van Rooyen and Lynne Brown.
