DA approaches court over ‘illegal’ sacking of Tshwane mayor, speaker
The African National Congress (ANC) and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) are set to present arguments in the high court in Pretoria on Tuesday on why the resolutions passed by the Tshwane council last week should stand.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng is challenging the legality of a motion of no confidence passed in council speaker Katlego Mathebe.
The council voted to remove mayor Stevens Mokgalapa and the speaker, but the high court suspended the resolutions passed after the DA dubbed the proceedings illegal.
The EFF’s Obakeng Ramabodu assumed the position after DA councillors refused to participate in the vote.
Gauteng leader John Moodey hopes the court will rule in their favour, helping them retain power over the city.
“The ANC and the EFF illegally and unlawfully elected an acting speaker and therefore everything else that happened in terms of the motions of no confidence against both the mayor and speaker we believe has been unlawful,” says Moodey.

The court previously suspended all decisions made by Tshwane council.
Moodey says the vote of no confidence remains void until the application is heard by the court today.
“We are confident that the court will make a permanent ruling that the speaker and the mayor remain DA councillors and that the unlawfully elected individuals will be denied to take the office.”
