DA drags SAA to Competition Commission
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
The Democratic Alliance (DA) is set to lodge a complaint against South African Airlines (SAA) over its alleged hiking of repatriation tickets.
The party has accused the ailing national carrier of increasing the price of repatriation tickets from Washington in the US to OR Tambo International Airport by 133.3%.
The DA's Ghaleb Cachalia says the repatriation ticket went from R15 000 to roughly R35 000.
"There must be an agenda here which seek to ensure that SAA, which is frankly bankrupt, benefits from it.
"But the fact is that ordinary citizens do not benefit, they cannot go in and they cannot go out.”
He says his party will write to the Competition Commission as it believes the "price gouging" of repatriation tickets is anti-competitive as other airlines are not allowed to do the same.
