DA, EFF to address media on coalition talks
Updated | By HeartFM
The Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) are set to announce their coalitions in hung councils at two separate media briefings on Wednesday.
This comes after more than a week of coalition talks, speculation and rumours.
An August 20 deadline to form coalitions was set for political parties following the results of the Local Government Elections.
Yesterday the EFF confirmed that it had been in coalition talks with all parties, including the ANC.
Political analyst Amanda Gouws says it's difficult to predict the outcome at this stage, but believes that some coalitions could cause instability.
"The EFF has now said that they have a policy that they are not going to go into coalition with the DA, but what they will do is to work in a cooperative manner with the DA on an issue-by-issue basis. If there are issues that they are interested in or are important to them, they will work together. So, they may support them in the very first council meeting to get them the necessary majority, but after that it will be a this cooperative working relationship - so that is going to cause a lot of instability in councils, I think," she said.
The EFF briefing takes place at noon while the DA's announcement is expected after 2.00pm.
