DA gives Zille green light to contest for FedEx chair

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has given the green light for its former leader Helen Zille to contest the powerful position of chair of the party’s federal council.
Zille announced on Friday that she is gunning to succeed James Selfe, four years after retiring as leader of the official opposition.
In a statement on Monday, the party disputed reports suggesting it will be seeking legal opinion on the eligibility of Zille to contest the position.
On Friday afternoon Zille, who was suspended from all party activities following a series of controversial tweets on colonialism, announced on Facebook that she is available for the position of chair of the party's federal council.
The DA’s presiding officer of federal council elections, Desiree Van Der Walt said she is satisfied that all the nominees have been fully vetted.
She also urged all four candidates, Athol Trollip, Thomas Walters, Mike Waters and Zille to campaign fairly.
"We trust that all the candidates, will campaign on their credentials and their offer of building a party that espouses the values of freedom, fairness, opportunity and diversity, with a vision of building one South Africa for all.”
