The Democratic Alliance in Limpopo plans to submit to the National Council of Provinces over 10,000 signed petitions against poor service delivery in the Waterberg District.

The party collected signatures from disgruntled residents in Thabazimbi, Bela Bela, and Modimolle-Mookgopong local municipalities over a three-month period.

Residents of these municipalities are angry at water shortages, poor roads and street lights, and high unemployment rates.

Speaking at a media briefing in Polokwane on Monday, the DA's Lindy Wilson said the approach aims to improve services and stringent accountability to rate payers.

"We are sitting with a crisis, and the crisis is real. We now face the highest unemployment we have seen in a very long time," she said.

"Water matters are real. People are having to use, with the little grants they get, which don't go up at the same rate with inflation, to buy water."

Wilson said they have explored all the avenues in the province in an attempt to solve the service delivery issues without any support from the local or provincial government.

"We are praying that the national [government] will react and I'm pretty sure they will but it is very sad that the attention that should have been given to this province through CoGHSTA, through the premier and through other departments has not been forthcoming and left Limpopo in a worse state now than we were in 10 years ago."
