The party’s Geordin Hill-Lewis says the DA has asked thousands of South Africans to write to the various bank CEOs,asking them to put an end to bailouts for SAA.
Hill-Lewis warns that, should the state goes ahead with yet another bailout for SAA during the tabling of the mini budget on Wednesday, then the party will be left with no choice but to intensify the campaign against the multiple bailouts.
“We recently met with banking CEOs to make the case to them that it is wrong for South Africa’s major banks to make any further support to SAA. We have more meeting with the banks CEOs and we have our last one on Thursday.

“We have also asked thousands of South Africans to write to the banks to stop supporting SAA and if this bailout does go ahead we will escalate that campaign further to try and apply public pressure to stop it.”
It is expected that SAA will receive yet another bailout when Mboweni tables the Mid-Term Budget Policy Statement on Wednesday.
According to the DA, Mboweni will announce a further R10.5 billion top-up for the ailing airline.
“We are told that R10.5 billion on top of R16.5 billion announced in February will be given to South African Airways on Wednesday.
“This is perfectly symbolic of the choice of state ambition over empowering people. It is a morally indefensible to choose South African Airways over South Africa. It should be resisted and opposed by all South Africans.”
