DA meets for 'deep introspection' after torrid 2019

Moodey says among the question the Democratic Alliance (DA) is asking itself now is: "How do we re-position ourselves as a party going forward?"

The DA is meeting on Thursday and Friday to strategise for the year ahead.

DA Gauteng provincial leader John Moodey says this comes "as any organisation at the beginning of each year, and especially after a bit of a torrid year last year, we're going into strat planning".

The sessions are expected to run late into the night and will be followed by a Federal Executive (FedEx) meeting over the weekend.

Moodey says "a whole host of things" will be discussed in the strategy session, including its coalition agreements and working relationship with the EFF.

In both Tshwane and Johannesburg, the DA's coalition governments are in tatters with the Tshwane mayoral seat an ongoing bone of contention.

The DA is also expected to tackle issues in the party, including issues arising from the review panel into the party's poor showing in the 2019 National elections.

In the wake of that report and subsequent developments, including the election of former party leader Helen Zille to its top structures, DA leader Mmusi Maimane and a number of other high-ranking party members resigned from the party.

Moodey says among the question the DA is asking itself now is: "How do we re-position ourselves as a party going forward?"

He says the party's strategy session will also discuss timeframes for its upcoming elective conference and which policies are most urgent for it to address.

The party is set to elect a new leader after John Steenhuisen was appointed as interim leader late last year.

"We will go through all those things and really, do a deep introspection and reposition of ourselves as a political party in South Africa."
