The Democratic Alliance has launched a billboard to pressure the government to ensure a stable water supply across municipalities in Gauteng.

Unveiled on Tuesday in Mamelodi, Tshwane, the billboard features a virtual image of Premier Panyaza Lesufi standing under a hotel shower.

The illustration references a controversial statement that the premier made while addressing residents about Gauteng’s recent water shortages.

Seemingly trying to demonstrate commiserations, Lesufi told irate residents that he was also affected by water shortages, and sometimes has to shower in hotels.

The comment sparked public backlash.

Lesufi later apologised, saying his statement was taken out of context.

DA Gauteng Provincial Leader Solly Msimanga explained that the party consulted specialists, engineers, and scientists who suggested ways to address the water crisis.

However, Msimanga claims their proposed plan was ignored by Premier Lesufi.

Msimanga says he hopes the billboard will push the government to act.

"We are saying with this billboard, we might be laughing about it, there are people in Hammanskral, there are people in Soshanguve, there are people in parts of Emfuleni, there are people in Ekurhuleni who are now still waiting to have water coming out of their taps as it used to be. And we are saying, you either continue doing the same, and you will not get the different result, you continue to get the same."

The party says Gauteng’s water crisis is worsening daily due to unattended water leaks and deteriorating infrastructure.
