DA wants debate on SAPS amid Mkhwanazi claims

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has written to the National Assembly Speaker for an urgent debate in Parliament on corruption in the SAPS.
This comes amid the allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi on Sunday, accusing Members of Parliament and some in SAPS of corruption and political interference.

Mkwanazi said the Deputy National Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya, apparently acting on instructions from Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, took control of 121 case dockets linked to political killings.
DA spokesperson on police Ian Cameron said it was worrying to hear reports of alleged political and criminal interference within special task teams.
“Our country will never win against violent crime, and our streets will never be safe, until the SAPS has robust integrity management inside and out,” said Cameron.
“These disturbing allegations of corruption, political interference, and malfeasance at the very top of South Africa's law enforcement and national security infrastructure must be investigated immediately.”
Cameron also called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to immediately respond to the allegations against Mchunu.
