School must retract saying it will call police to pick up foreign learners
The Department of Education in Gauteng has confirmed the authenticity of a letter sent to parents of foreign learners at Eastleigh Primary School.
The letter was sent to the parents by the school.
The Department’s spokesperson Oupa Bodibe says the school has been ordered to retract the last part of the letter, which warns parents that the school will call the police to fetch pupils with outdated documents.
“We do accept and understand the logic of the letter, however we are worried that the letter states parents will have to fetch their children at a police station if they do not comply with Home Affairs regulations,” Bodibe says.
The letter has been circulated on social media, with people expressing concern in light of the current tensions between South Africans and immigrants.
Bodibe says the department has encouraged the schools to handle the matter with sensitivity.
“In the current context of attacks of foreign nationals, we have encouraged schools to handle this matter with sensitivity. The department and the schools have to comply with Home Affairs regulations so we urge parents to also comply,” says Bodibe.
