Deadline extended for evidence leader nominations in Ramaphosa impeachment inquiry
Parliament’s Impeachment Committee probing the Phala Phala matter has extended the deadline for new nominations for an evidence leader to Friday, as it works to finalise a shortlist ahead of next week’s crucial meeting.
The extension of the nomination deadline signals the committee’s effort to ensure a credible and thorough selection process before moving the high-profile Phala Phala inquiry into its next phase.
Chairperson Makashule Gana made the announcement during a virtual committee sitting on Wednesday, urging political parties and members to submit names as soon as possible to speed up the vetting process.
"As things stand, we extend the time for new nominations to Friday, 18:00 hours, but I want to appeal to Honourable Members and political parties, if you have a name today, please submit it today so that the team at Legal can check availability and do any further due diligence."
Gana committed that by Monday, members will receive a refined list containing only candidates who are available and have passed initial checks.
"It's my commitment that by Monday, you will have the list of only available ones. We’ll no longer go back to the ones that are not available.”
The evidence leader will play a pivotal role in the inquiry, including leading evidence, examining witnesses, and assisting the committee in determining whether there are sufficient grounds for impeachment proceedings.
Four advocates have already been confirmed as available and remain in the current pool of candidates. This includes Advocate Kate Hofmeyer SC, Advocate Pule Seleka SC, Advocate Ismail Jamie SC, and Advocate Vuyani Ngalwana SC.
Additional nominations received before the deadline will be added to this pool, subject to verification.
The final vetted list will give committee members time to consult and build consensus ahead of a scheduled meeting on Wednesday, where a decision on the appointment is expected.
"The new pool of those who are available will be circulated to Members on Monday in preparation for the meeting on Wednesday," said Gana.
