Death toll expected to rise in Mpumalanga crash
Nine people died following a head-on collision on the N4 near Mbombela in the early hours of Monday morning.
Authorities are still assessing the damage after a bakkie pulling a trailer and a vehicle from Mozambique collided head-on.
Provincial community safety spokesperson, Joseph Mabuza, says preliminary investigations suggest one of the drivers lost control and veered into oncoming traffic.
"The other vehicle was pulling a trailer and was coming from the Malelane direction. There was also a vehicle from Mozambique."
The N4 was closed while police cleared the scene and determine the final death toll.
"The people are burnt beyond recognition. It is a bit complicated but we will soon know the extent of damage."
