Department of Correctional Services taking hostage drama 'very seriously'

The Department of Correctional Service (DCS) says it is committed to prioritising the safety of prison warders.
This comes after two female officials were held hostage by a sentenced prisoner in an office at the Goedemoed Correctional Service Centre in the Free State on Friday.
According to Free State police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, the hostage drama started at 15:30 and continued for almost three hours.
"According to the information [available], the sentenced prisoner, who was busy with cleaning duties, forced both officials in the office where he locked himself with them," said Makhele.
Police and prisons union, Popcru alleges that the surviving warden was raped by the inmate.

DCS spokesperson, Logan Maistry says the situation at the correctional center has stabilised and the department takes such incidents very seriously.
"Top management of Correctional Services were at Goedemoed correctional center since last night (Friday) and counselling and other relevant employee assistance will continue, " Maistry said.
He adds that the Department is cooperating with the police to speed up with the finalisation of the investigation.
"As a department our officials are our most valuable assets, we value the role of our officials in transforming corrections in South Africa," said Maistry.
"We will continue to do everything possible, together with all relevant role players, to ensure that the safety of our officials is not compromised."
