Dirco confirms South African kidnapped in Nigeria
The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) says it cannot yet confirm the identity or the circumstances surrounding the kidnapping of a South African in Nigeria.
However, Dirco says it has received confirmation that a South African is believed to be among a group of five people kidnapped in southeast Nigeria after their vehicle was attacked.
The South African Embassy is expected to travel to the area where the kidnapping took place, Dirco spokesperson Nelson Kgwete confirmed.
He says: "The embassy is working with the Australian High Commission and the Nigerian government on the matter."
The hold-up, in which the driver was also shot dead, happened in the Akpabuyo district near the capital of Cross River state, Calabar, on Wednesday.
According to Nigerian police, all five were workers with Australian mining and engineering giant Macmahon.
The five kidnapped include a South African, two Australians and two Nigerians.
