Discussion on vaccination of all adults to be concluded this week - Phaahla
Updated | By Gaopalelwe Phalaetsile
Health Minister Joe Phaahla says discussions around the opening of vaccination to all adults 18 years and older will be concluded this week.
Phaahla was speaking in Mpumalanga on Monday during his visit to different vaccination sites in the province.
At this stage, South Africans between the ages of 18 and 34 are scheduled to register for vaccination from September 1.
Phaahla said it will be easier, from an administration point of view, to open for this age group as well.
"There seems to be a desire from young people to get vaccinated. It will also just make it easier in terms of administration for instance when you go to workplaces, whether it's in the farms or factories you find people who are below 35.
“So, this will make it easier because most people in workplaces, including mines, are above 18 but below 35 and it will be easier to just vaccinate everyone.”
Phaahla said before this proposal can go to cabinet, it first needs to be discussed at the National Coronavirus Command Council and the inter-ministerial committee on vaccines.
But he believes discussions are likely to conclude this week.
Phaahla said there are enough vaccine stocks to start administering the doses to all adults.
"They are enough, but we are expecting more doses before the end of this month. But we have enough stock. That I can assure everyone in the public.”
