Dlamini needs to be held accountable: grant beneficiaries
Updated | By Maryke Vermaak
The Department of Social Development says it always believed the Constitutional Court would be best placed to resolve the social grants issue.
Minister Bathabile Dlamini apologised yesterday, hours after the highest court in the land ordered that the contract between the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and service provider Cash Paymaster Services (CPS) be extended for a year - despite the initial contract being declared unlawful.
The court was asked to step in and execute oversight after the department failed to find a new service provider. This lead to fears that around 17 million grants would not being paid on April 1.
The court ordered SASSA to start finding an appropriate alternative and to give them updates every three months.
These grant beneficiaries were in court yesterday and told the media they were very relieved by the judgement, but feel Dlamini should be held accountable.
